Community Archivist Collection -- Wakefield Inn, Page 2
The
coloured photographs are of the Wakefield Inn, Sechelt, taken by the
archivist and Ivor Watson in September and November 2005 just prior
to its demolition. The first owner of the Wakefield Inn was Major T.
Sutherland, said to have been a tea planter in Ceylon/Sri Lanka, who
came to the Sunshine Coast after serving in WWI. He bought the general
store in Egmont, sold it in 1921 and in 1926 was listed in the Sechelt
directory as a broker. In 1926, married to Rena Nickson, he had a log
house, known as Wakefield House, built by Hector McDonald, in which
they lived until WWII. Major Sutherland became a game constable for
the Provincial Police and a full police constable in the 1930s. By 1940
he had sold his home and left the Sunshine Coast to serve in WWII. He
never returned and died in 1946. His former home, renamed The Wakefield
Inn, became a beer parlour and remained a popular place for Sechelt
residents until it was torn down in 2006. W.J. Wakefield was listed
in the Sechelt section of the B.C. Directory from 1902 until 1923 as
farmer, rancher and logger. He kept a mixed farm on the banks of the
creek named after him and just west of Wakefield Inn, also named after
him.
