Senior Citizen's Association,
Branch 69 (Sechelt) -- Madge Bell, Page 1
In 1968, the Old Age Pensioners (Branch 96) of
Sechelt voted to give up their charter and join the Seniors
Citizens' Association of British Columbia. The 138 members
of the Branch received the charter on Jan. 16, 1969. Regular
meetings and social events were held in the Legion's old
hall on Mermaid St. on a rental basis. When the Legion
decided to sell this property in 1974, Branch 69 was able to
purchase it. Renovations and upgrades were accomplished over
the years and many activities regularly took place in it. In
1982 a building committee was struck with the approval of
the members to look into purchasing property with adequate
parking for a new centre. In 1984 over 200 members voted to
purchase a piece of property at the corner of Trail Avenue
and Spindrift Lane, and a new Seniors' Activity Centre was
built. Today, it is known as the Sechelt Activity Centre and
open to anyone who wishes to become a member. The facility
is also rented on a regular basis for various functions.
