The Sechelt Public Library was started by volunteers with the first collection of books being stored in Mrs. Bea Swanson's house until a suitable location could be found to house them. Mrs. Ada Dawe contacted Mr. Jack Redman, a local grocer, who donated space above his store on Cowrie Street, for the first public library. From 1961 until 1966 the library operated out of this space. It then moved for a year to a ground level floor in a donated cottage on the south side of Cowrie Street, where the Sechelt Hospital Auxiliary store is today. A Centennial grant paid for a new building to be built on Trail Avenue behind today's Shell Gas Station. It was completely staffed with volunteers until the mid-1980s when the first paid librarian was appointed.

In 1995 plans were approved for a new library which was built and opened in 1996 with the District of Sechelt offices located on the second floor. This present library is staffed by full-time and part-time trained librarians but is still dependent on many volunteers who help in the library and the Friends of the Library group who raise funds for equipment.
