unknown -- Clara Lyell's home in Halfmoon Bay. Clara had emigrated from
England to Vancouver where she met and married Charles Priestland. They
pre-empted 160 acres, including waterfront, at the head of Halfmoon Bay.
There she built a house and became postmistress at the Welcome Pass Post
Office, later renamed, in 1910, Halfmoon Bay P.O. After her husband, who
had remained in Vancouver, died, she married John Lyell, a local fisherman.
Years later he was accused of murdering Bob Rainey after an argument but
whether he was guilty or not, he disappeared and it remains one of Halfmoon
Bay's mysteries. Clara died in 1933 at St. Mary's Hospital in Pender Harbour.
