Atlee Collection -- Harry and Jessie Irvine, Page 2

The photographs are of 1912 pioneer settlers Harry and Jessica Irvine, their home and boats at present day Tuwanek up the east side of Sechelt Inlet. They tented for a year in Porpoise Bay while they built their home "Heronsghyll" in which they lived a virtually self-sufficient life, putting in their own water supply and generator for electricity and growing large quantities of fruit and vegetables. Their home and garden became show pieces where summer visitors could rent spotless cabins and enjoy a peaceful holiday. Mrs. Irvine canvassed successfully for a road around the east part of Porpoise Bay; it was built in 1923/1924. Mr. Atlee's mother was a friend of the Irvine's. The Atlees have resided permanently in Gibson's since 1935.
